The Play Years

Early Childhood, aka The Play Years, is defined as the time from about two years old until the child is about six. It is called the play years because most of the learning is based on play experience. Children in this age range develop skills, ideas, and values that they will use the rest of their life. Physical growth slows down compared to the infancy stage, but bone and muscle growth continues. Children also lose some of their baby fat. Children are ready to tackle the world in a playful mood, however their young minds are still developing and they can't think logical. They are more focused on themselves then others. Children enjoy being social in play groups. During this stage of growth, children start to have a strong sense of gender roles in both appearance and behavior.
